God Made Boys and Girls
God Made Boys and Girls
Helping Children Understand the Gift of Gender
by Marty Machowski
God Made Boys and Girls helps children understand that their gender is a gift from the God who made them and loves them. The story begins as the girls and boys at Grace Christian School are discussing if boys will always be boys and girls will always be girls.
Their teacher explains that God gives each of us the gift of being male or female before we are born, and that you continue to be a boy or a girl whether you like to climb trees or play house, play tag or color pictures, cause a ruckus or sit quietly.
In a world where there is so much confusion about gender and identity, pastor and best-selling author Marty Machowski shares the simple, clear truth that all of us are made in God's image as either male or female-and what God made is very good!
Included in the back of the book is a special section just for parents and caregivers that gives biblical guidance and help as they have this important conversation with their children.
Compass Reviewed
Marty has a way of bringing up tough subjects in a gentle and child friendly way. This book is careful to explain to children that "boy" activities such as football and "girl" activities such as dance are not actually what define gender in people. Marty explains that some girls like activities such as football and some boys enjoy dance, and that although young children tend to define boys vs girls based on these preferences, it is explained that these activities are not how God defines your gender, those are just simply interests. Marty then goes on to explain the basic science behind DNA and the XX and XY chromosomes that God created to define gender. The book walks children through that basic science and then relates the information back to the biblical story of Adam and Eve. I would highly recommend this book for the younger ages and can see how it would even benefit older children to start with this book and work their way up to more difficult situations that are not so easy to navigate in our culture. Many great conversations can be started with reading this book to your children.
