The Making, Taking, and Faking of Life

From the time of Hippocrates until the 20th century, medical ethics was confined to the bedside, mainly addressing the patient-physician relationship. Advances in medical science and technology, with the resultant emergence of biotechnology, have broadened and moved the discussion away from the bedside to the public square. Medical technology has also challenged the Judeo-Christian understanding of human anthropology. Bioethics involves the discussion of moral philosophy at the nexus of medicine, science, technology, and theology.

This study will consider such ethical issues as abortion, assisted reproductive technologies, assisted suicide (MaiD), genetics, and transhumanism, from a Christian worldview with God's Word as our guide.

Course Facilitator: Jeff Betcher

Jeff retired from medical practice in Regina where he practiced in the areas of anesthesiology and critical care medicine. Jeff holds a Master of Arts in bioethics from Trinity Graduate School.

Jeff served on the clinical ethics committee in Regina while he was in practice. Jeff has taught bioethics at Millar College of the Bible as well as in a church setting.

Jeff is also a member of the editorial review board of Dignitas, an academic publication of The Center of Bioethics and Human Dignity.
